The Annual Giving Tree is Here!

Our Annual Giving Tree is officially up and we are excited to start accepting donations for the Hickman House. Simply come in to CAPERS, grab a star (or a few) from the tree, and return your gift to the tree before December 23rd. Donating a gift is a great way to give back to the local community this holiday season!

The Hickman House is a local shelter that provides safety for women and children who have been victims of domestic violence, and they provide resources to help these women start new lives for their families. For more than 25 years, CAPERS has been collecting gifts and toys for the brave women and children who are transitioning from very abusive situations. This mighty holiday tree collects thousands of gifts each year for these families.

Be the Perfect Guest this Holiday Season

Many of you will find yourselves as guests next Thursday or in the following month of holiday events.  This post will provide you with some great tips to ensure that you are the perfect guest and get invited back year after year!

  • It is always a good idea to bring a nice gift for the hostess; after all, he/she likely spent several days preparing the delicious feast!  While wine is always welcome, try and think outside of the box this year. Here are some ideas for thoughtful hostess gifts this season.

Some festive paper napkins and a nice candle votive
A dish towel with some scented dish soap

A cocktail book accompanied by some glasses
Candles and wooden candle coasters

  • Be on time! If you are going to be late, call and let the hostess know.
  • Call an hour ahead to see if there is anything the hostess needs- perhaps a last minute run to the grocery store.
  • Always offer to bring something such as an appetizers or dessert.
  • When you get to the hostess's house, offer to help.
  • Be sure to introduce yourself to the other guests and circulate the room.
  • Don't overstay your welcome.
  • Send a thank you note the following week!

"Susan Goodwin has been a celebrated jewelry artist and tour de force in pearl and precious stone showpieces since 1980.  Born in Kirkland, WA in 1954, Susan traveled the world before returning to her roots and settling in Seattle. Her early years and first artistic influences were formed in the still exotic, tropical paradise on Hawaii. Her spirited mother fled the gray skies of the Pacific Northwest and moved to Honolulu when Susan was only three years old. It was there that Susan recalls becoming entranced by nature; exploring the beach, the jungle and the world around her and developed her passion for color, texture and light."

Dressing Your Table for the Holidays 101

The holidays are quickly approaching, so to help you out during this season of events and dinner parties, we made this handy guide that will teach you everything you need to know about dressing your table for company.

Setting your table 101:

These two diagrams from Brunch at Saks depict the proper way to set the table, both informal and formal. We won't tell if you edit the formal setting a bit!

Measuring your table for a tablecloth 101:
Finding the perfect tablecloth for your dining room table can be tricky. Luckily, we are here to help!
As a general rule of thumb, aim for a tablecloth that has dimension that are 24"- 30" longer in both length and width than your table.

60" round table- 90" round linen
72" round table- 102" round linen
30" x 72" banquet table- 54" x 96"linen
30" x 96" banquet table- 54" x 120"linen
60" x 60" square table- 90" x 90"linen

If you are still in need of a holiday tablecloth, we have some beautiful Le Jacquard Français linens at CAPERS and large selection available for custom order.

Dos and Don'ts

  • Don't ever use scented candles in the dining room!
  • Do play with fall colors- warm oranges, reds, yellows, and greens
  • Don't use a tablecloth that reaches the floor.
  • Do measure your table before buying a new tablecloth.
  • Don't crowd your dinner table with decorations.
  • Do utilize fall foliage and crops such as squash, colorful corn, and fall leaves.

We will be posting entertaining and decorating tips all throughout the holiday season!

Easy Entertaining......Baked Feta Appetizer!

The Fall is here and with the cool weather comes warm parties! Be sure to bring this delicious appetizer to the next event you attend or host. We served it at CAPERS during our artist reception for the October Art Walk and it got rave reviews from our customers!

CAPERS Baked Feta Dip
8 ounces Feta Cheese (crumbled)
6-8 ounces of pitted, mixed, marinated olives
Line the bottom of a greased small baking dish with feta.
Layer the olives on top of the feta.
Drizzle with olive oil.
Bake at 400 degrees F until warm and melted (about 20 minutes).

The recipe we served in the store was adapted from the Kathy Casey recipe below.

Makes 10 to 15 servings

1 thick (7- to 8-ounce) piece feta cheese

Lightly oil the bottom of an 8- to 9-inch ovenproof skillet, such as cast iron.

Place the cheese in the center of the pan, and then top with the Artichoke Pepper Olive Spread.
At this point, you can cover and refrigerate the skillet for up to 1 day.
When ready to bake, preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Bake the cheese for about 20 minutes, or until soft and gooey.
Serve immediately, right out of the pan, with slices of rustic bread, crostini, pita, or pita chips.

Kathy Casey is an amazing celebrity chef from Seattle. She is frequently
featured in magazines, on TV and radio, and she is the owner of Dish D'Lish.
If you are looking for some great recipes, we recommend one of Kathy's cookbooks.
Visit the Kathy Casey website to find more of her recipes or to order a cookbook.

The West Seattle Art Walk is less than one week away!
For those of you who don't know, the Art Walk is a monthly event that takes
place from 6-9 PM on the second Thursday of each month. Shops stay open
late and display art by local artists. During the month of October, we will be
featuring artist Mary Flynn-Gillies at CAPERS.

Mary's paintings are available for viewing and purchase now in our store.

Stanley Rivers 10x8
Poppy Blue 23x30

Here is an excerpt from Mary's artist statement:

"This fascination with weathered
integrity has found a comfortable
home in her two-dimensional work.
Her desire is to achieve this sense of
time and history in her work by using
tattered, stained, and once cherished
found papers as the foundation for
her imagery.

Her imagery at first glance is ageless
but at closer inspection is interjected
with modern thought and often times
whimsy... bringing together the inspiring
dynamic of past versus present"

Visit Mary Flynn-Gillies' website for more information on her and her art.

Hope to see you at CAPERS on October 10th during the Art Walk!

Day 1 plus 28 {years}

June 18th is always a day of review and reflection and remembering.  Remembering that youthful
"I can do anything" spirit I brought to a small coffee shop and gourmet take-out replete with
crazy kitchen tools all those years ago.  Remembering the anticipation of taking off on a
new adventure.  Remembering the excitement.  Remembering the possibilities........at that time
it was "we'll have 50  stores up and down the coast and then retire."
(this was when Starbucks had less than 5 locations).

After 28 years, and many twists and turns, here we are.....................a lovely home shop,
an anchor in our neighborhood, and a contributing member of our community.
We began with the mission:  sell products that are interesting, get to know our clients, and
become a contributing member of the community.  Even though the format has changed the
mission is as relevant today as then........different container, same mission.

We invite you to join us in celebration......

Tuesday, June 18
4-6 p.m.

cake & champagne & some fun specials will be served up.
We're raising a glass to another year and most importantly to the many customers
that have traded with us over the years.
You're the reason we're here and we're truly grateful........
Best,
Lisa and the CAPERS staff
