Just a reminder of your responsibility when invited to events:
1. R.S.V.P. to the party invitation quickly so the host(ess) can plan accordingly
2. Arrive at the party slightly after the apponted time (10 minutes after not 10 minutes before)
3. Dress in appropriate attire. If this is a formal party it is disrespectful to show up in jeans.
4. Bring a host(ess) gift that is thoughtful and does not require the host(ess) to do anything with it once you present it. Note: flowers require work once you arrive.
5. Make a point of moving from guest to guest at the party. Part of your job as a guest is to help mix up the conversation and to keep the party going. This is a participatory sport.
6. If the party is casual be attentive about assisting the host(ess) in introducing guests to each other, serving cocktails, passing hors d' oeuvres or cleaning up.
7. Plan to leave the party before the designated end time. If the invitation says 7-10 you should plan to leave before 10.
8. Send a handwritten Thank You note via mail thanking the host(ess) for the invitation and lovely party.

Karen's Fabulous Prawns

My good friend Karen brought this hors d' oeuvre to a party a number of years ago. I immediately asked for the recipe and have taken the dish to many subsequent gatherings. It is Soooooo Simple and that's what makes it fabulous......

Karen's Fabulous Prawns

1/4 c. Italian Parsley
1/4 c. Minced Shallot
1/4 c. Fresh Tarragon Leaves
1/2 c. White Wine/Champagne Vinegar
1/2 c. Olive Oil
4 T. Dijon Mustard
1-2 t. Red Pepper Flakes {adjust to taste}
8 cloves garlic minced
Whisk together the above and pour over 2 lbs (+ or -) precooked prawns. {I usually use the 40 per pound size from the frozen food section}. Let marinate for up to one day. Stir every so often to distribute the marindade.
Pour out into a bowl or platter and serve with skewers. Pre-skewer and serve as "lollipops" or place over a bed of greens for a lovely salad.

Fall is here & Summer too!!! I love this time of year.....nearly 80 degrees, sunny, with an evening coolness. Thoughts are beginning to turn inside as I savor every last second of the light and warmth. Beáta was born in the former Czechoslovakia. Her artistic talent was discovered at a very young age, and she began her many years of study under Eastern Europe’s finest instructors. She ultimately graduated from art school, specializing in fine art and art restoration. Having studied restoration, Beáta has developed a truly unique ability to understand how the masters created their works, and she applies similar techniques to her own. Heavily influenced by her native Eastern Europe, the use of color and texture are woven into her versatile style. Beáta came to the United States in 1990, and worked for many years as a textile designer and artist in Los Angeles before coming to Seattle. She continued her work as a textile designer for Eddie Bauer-Home, which included several popular bedding designs. She has also developed designs for REI and Land’s End. Kate Endle makes collage art that is sophisticated and intelligent for kids and adults using decorative and hand painted papers. Influenced by folk art, with a touch of Asian inspiration, and a dash of eclectic whimsey, subject matter includes floral still lifes, flocks of birds and the always popular owl motif. Her work can be found on greeting cards, children books, magnets, home decor products, and calendars. She attended The Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio and currently resides in West Seattle with her husband and creative collaborator, children's musician, Caspar Babypants.

It's a Chili Kind of Day

We often receive requests for recipes from the CAPERS cafe and so this morning while I was making up a pot of Vegetarian Black Bean Chili I took the time to do some measuring......here's the CAPERS recipe that was a mainstay of our repertoire for years. This is the perfect recipe for our 20 degree weather.....adjust the chili powder to taste and you'll be warmed right up.

Seasoning
4 T chile powder
1 T smoked ancho chile powder
2 T ground cumin
1 T oregano
2 t. cinnamon

5 cloves garlic pressed
3 c diced onion
3 c diced carrot
3 c diced celery
3 c diced green/red pepper
2 28 oz cans whole peeled tomato [broken up]
6-8 cups black beans cooked

Saute garlic, onion, carrot, celery in 2-3 T olive oil. Add 4 T spice blend to vegetables. Saute until translucent. Add peppers and 2-3 more T. spice blend. Saute 3-5 minutes longer. Add beans and tomatoes and water for desired consistency. Add additional spice blend to taste.

You can top off with sour cream, cheddar, scallion or whatever condiments you prefer. Enjoy.
Recipe makes 5 qts and is easily frozen.

Diane Graves has been decorating people and homes in Seattle for almost 30 years. (She must have started as a child!) I have several pieces of jewelry from the Orbit days, a retail store located first on Queen Ann and then in Fremont. I cherish these baubles as each is a little poem or message that I carry with me. Then she and friend and artist David Farnsworth collaborated on copper ornaments which adorn lamps, windows, and Christmas trees with whimsical messages of love and hope. Presently Diane puts her beauty and wisdom to work on beautiful light columns...art lit from within. The lights are lovely and warm, and can add a golden glow to a corner of a room...perfect for an area of peace and meditation. Come meet Didi on Thursday and absorb the love in the room. CAPERS hosts her art the whole month of May, and the artist on Thursday night from 6-9pm. Pleasant weather is expected, and the Art Walk makes for a great date night or girlfriend get-together.

I know we're all dying for a little warm weather so we can hang out outside and soak up the sun (you know...that yellow orb in the sky?). CAPERS has the best looking and most durable stuff around. (just got back from the National Hardware Show in Las Vegas and saw tons...nothing compared to Summer Classics.) Pictured here is the Classic Wicker Single Glider. It glides back and forth for soothing relaxation. It's all-weather wicker built on an aluminum frame so it's perfect for Seattle spring/summer. To that end, we sell products directly off the sales floor or by special order using our extensive collection of catalogs, fabrics and finishes.

Many of our manufacturers incorporate traditional furniture making techniques while using FSC certified hardwoods, recycled components, water-based glues, organic fabrics and domestic factories.

CAPERS design services involve in-store consultation as well as home visits. We charge $75 for an initial home visit. This allows us to discuss the scope of the project at hand, provide immediate design advice, and determine the next steps in the process. When the customer purchases $500 or more (within 60 days of the visit) we apply the design fee to the purchase. We collaborate with local design talent on larger projects to provide a comprehensive design team to clients.

Since I've been at CAPERS nearly 14 years, you can imagine that I have a nice collection of furniture and accessories. I have a tiny studio apartment, but it looks great with my stylish things. Here is a super comfy chair from Cisco Brothers in LA called the Bruno chair. Dog called Loretta. She actually prefers the Cisco sofa nested in a silk fleece throw from Dreamsacks. Jennifer Ament illustrates an image, depicting everything from flora and fauna, to French pop art. She then transfers the image to linoleum, reworking it, cutting around and inside the image, creating a beautiful piece of work that is intricate and exacting. These linocuts are printed in limited editions of 30 or less and are complemented by vintage or custom-made frames

We've been talking a lot about candles. We all love them, but, boy do we hate wax on our table clothes. We get the dripless candles, but if it's crocked in the holder, or there's a draft---we're bound to get a mess. You may know this already, but here's how to get wax out of a table cloth.

With a regular table knife or butter knife, scrape the wax off as best you can. Get a paper shopping bag and cut pieces for both the top and the bottom of the cloth. Iron the spot(covered on each side with the paper) with a fairly hot iron, moving the pieces of paper each time to soak up the wax. Keep going until no more wax shows on the paper. Use your trusty stain remover on the oil stain that is left. We use K2 dry cleaning powder, but any grease remover will do. Launder as usual. Don't put your table cloth in the dryer if the wax stain still shows. Hang it dry and use the grease remover on it again and relaunder. Good luck and light 'em up!
